New Delhi, July 30 (NationPress) The government has taken action by blocking 43 over-the-top (OTT) platforms to combat the dissemination of explicit, adult, violent, or culturally insensitive content, ensuring adherence to both legal and ethical standards, as reported in Parliament on Wednesday.
The government enacted the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media, Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 on February 25, 2021, under the IT Act, 2000.
According to Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, “Part-III of these rules outlines a Code of Ethics for digital news publishers and online curated content platforms (OTT). These platforms are obligated to refrain from transmitting any content that is currently prohibited by law.”
OTT platforms must perform age-based self-classification of their content, following general guidelines outlined in the Rules, which include provisions regarding nudity, sex, and violence, as stated by Vaishnaw in a written response.
The minister also highlighted that OTT platforms must implement sufficient safeguards to restrict access to age-inappropriate content for children, ensuring adequate access control measures.
Furthermore, Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, 2000 allows appropriate governments to notify intermediaries of unlawful acts or content for removal or access restriction.
The government has previously issued advisories to OTT platforms and their self-regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with Indian laws and the Code of Ethics outlined in the IT Rules, 2021 while hosting content.
“After thorough consultation with relevant ministries, 43 OTT platforms have been blocked to date,” Vaishnaw noted.
Recently, the government directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to cut public access to 25 OTT platforms, including well-known names like Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix.
This initiative aims to reduce the spread of content considered sexually explicit and in violation of Indian legal and cultural standards. The platforms affected include Big Shots App, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflicks.
