New Delhi/Shillong/Agartala, April 7 (NationPress) Union Minister for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, proposed on Monday that the tourism frameworks of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and various other South Asian countries should be thoroughly examined to formulate a model that can significantly enhance the tourism capabilities of the northeastern region.

During a virtual session of the High Level Task Force (HLTF) aimed at promoting investments in the northeastern area, Scindia emphasized, “The region's abundant cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes can be utilized to foster sustainable development, enhance local economies, and create job opportunities.”

The DoNER minister shared his insights on X, stating: “With the growth rate of the North Eastern Region (NER) exceeding the national average, it is crucial to maintain this upward trend. The HLTF will act as a pivotal platform for all eight NER states, steering initiatives towards establishing a Viksit North East.”

The Ministry of DoNER had previously formed the HLTF, with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha serving as its convener, alongside Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chief Ministers Conrad K. Sangma (Meghalaya), Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland), and Prem Singh Tamang (Sikkim) as members.

An official from Shillong mentioned that the meeting focused on strategies to unlock the tourism potential of northeastern India.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the importance of presenting the northeast as a unified destination to both domestic and international tourists, stressing the need for close collaboration among the states to enhance tourism.

He praised the initiative taken by the DoNER Minister to establish the task force, which he described as a “transformative” action to uplift tourism across the entire northeastern region.

He added that the NE region has developed industrial policies that are laying the groundwork for industrial advancement.

The HLTF is tasked with exploring the tourism potential of the area, recommending necessary interventions, pinpointing strategic gaps, and crafting a comprehensive plan for the sector's growth.

Chief Minister Saha of Tripura proposed initiatives already in motion within the state to promote tourism, including showcasing unique northeastern cuisines.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang of Sikkim elaborated on tourism interventions and strategies to increase tourist traffic to the state, advocating for ongoing marketing and branding efforts for the region.

Tamang also suggested that all northeastern states collaborate to enhance tourism.

The HLTF was established following the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), which took place in November of the previous year in Agartala, Tripura.

This task force has been created by the Ministry of DoNER in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism.

As part of its strategy, each of the eight states will identify one tourism circuit. This initiative aims to attract both domestic and international tourists to the region.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who chairs the NEC, presided over the plenary session.
