Bhavnagar leopard attack: 9-year-old boy mauled to death in Gujarat's Mahuva
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A nine-year-old boy was killed in a suspected leopard attack in Bambhaniya village of Mahuva taluka, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, on Tuesday evening, 8 July, marking what a local family member described as the third such fatal wildlife incident in the area within recent days. The victim has been identified as Nitya Gondaliya.
How the Attack Unfolded
Nitya left his home at approximately 5:30 pm and was heading towards agricultural fields near Mobhiyana village when he was reportedly attacked by a wild animal. According to local police, the attack is believed to have occurred at around 6:30 pm. When the child did not return home, his family and fellow villagers launched a search across surrounding agricultural fields and nearby forest areas.
His father, Prakash Gondaliya, said: 'When I came home, my son was not there. After that, we searched the entire village. Then we went towards the forest and the farms to look for him. It was there that we found my son.' The boy's body was discovered between 7 pm and 8 pm following an intensive search.
Nature of Injuries and Animal Sighted
Nitya was found with severe injuries and was rushed for medical treatment, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. According to police, the child had suffered a torn left leg, multiple scratches across his body, injuries to his neck and elbow, and extensive head injuries, with part of the scalp torn away.
During the search, villagers reportedly spotted two wild animals, including what appeared to be a leopard cub, in the vicinity. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether the attack was carried out by a leopard or a lion. There are no CCTV cameras in the area to help establish the sequence of events.
Investigation Under Way
Forest department officials have launched a formal investigation, examining footprints, photographs, and other physical evidence to identify the animal responsible. The absence of surveillance infrastructure in the area has complicated the probe.
A relative of the family told reporters that this was the third such incident in the area in recent days, adding that 'the animals seen in the area appeared to be wild leopards.' Officials have not yet independently corroborated the count of prior incidents.
Community Fear and Broader Concern
The incident has left residents of Bambhaniya village in mourning and has renewed alarm among local communities over repeated human-wildlife conflict in the region. The Bhavnagar district, which borders forested zones, has seen growing concern over big cat movement into agricultural and residential fringes. Authorities have not yet announced any measures to address community safety in the area.
The forest department's findings are awaited, and the matter is expected to draw attention to the adequacy of wildlife monitoring and early-warning systems in Gujarat's rural districts.
