Rohtas Police Unveils Bride-Buying Syndicate; Minor Rescued, 24 Arrested
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, April 8 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Rohtas Police uncovered a suspected 'bride-buying' syndicate, apprehending 24 individuals, including eight women, and rescuing a minor girl during a late-night raid on Tuesday in the Bikramganj region of Bihar.
Following a tip-off, the police conducted a raid at a marriage hall where a minor girl was on the verge of being wed.
The operation resulted in the confiscation of approximately Rs 1 lakh in cash and jewelry at the scene.
An official reported that the case involves a minor from Chakia in Buxar district, who was being married to a young man from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.
Authorities had received intelligence indicating that a financially-struggling family was being enticed with offers to arrange the marriage.
In a swift response, a team from the Bikramganj Police Station stormed the venue, halting the ceremony and causing chaos.
The police detained individuals from both families involved, who are currently under interrogation to uncover the full network behind this operation.
“In total, 24 individuals, including eight women, have been taken into custody. All are being questioned, and a thorough investigation is underway,” stated Sindhu Shekhar Singh, SDPO Bikramganj.
Investigators suspect the involvement of an organized network that preys on impoverished families, offering incentives to marry off minor girls to men from various states.
However, the groom’s family has claimed ignorance regarding the girl's age.
“We traveled from Madhya Pradesh for our son’s wedding and were unaware that the girl was a minor. We planned to conduct the marriage according to customs,” remarked the groom’s father.
Officials noted that similar cases have emerged in the region previously, involving the trafficking of young girls disguised as marriage, particularly to states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, often facilitated by brokers.
Recently, a joint police and administrative team executed a raid in the Dawath area, detaining over 80 individuals in a similar crackdown.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of child marriage and trafficking networks operating under the guise of societal customs, with authorities intensifying efforts to dismantle such syndicates.
