Jammu, Sep 14 (NationPress) The 'Project Sampark' initiative by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully reinstated the crucial Mahanpur-Theyn connectivity axis, which was severely impacted by a recent cloudburst and landslide in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district.
A statement from the defence ministry noted on Sunday, “In the wake of the catastrophic cloudburst on August 17, 2025, in the Kathua district, significant disruptions were observed on the Pedu Nala along the Mahanpur-Theyn axis, leading to the destruction of an existing bridge and an under-construction bridge. This extraordinary incident was triggered by heavy landslides and landslips due to relentless rainfall, effectively isolating the vital route connecting Ranjit Sagar Dam and Mahanpur.”
The aftermath posed considerable challenges, including a large buildup of debris, scattered damaged bridge components, persistent adverse weather conditions, and the isolation of the area due to simultaneous blockages on alternative routes.
“In spite of these daunting circumstances, the 69 Road Construction Company (RCC) of Project Sampark (BRO), commanded by S.K. Singh, Commander of the 35 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) situated in Udhampur, initiated a systematic and intense restoration operation. The Project Sampark team, under the guidance of Assistant Engineer Surendran, worked continuously to clear access to the site, deploying excavators and heavy machinery, removing landslide debris, redirecting water flow, constructing box culverts, installing humepipes, and building gabion walls to stabilize the area and restore the roadway,” the defence ministry stated.
Their relentless efforts led to the successful restoration of the damaged road section for heavy vehicle traffic by the evening of September 13, reinstating connectivity between Bilawar, Kathua, and Dhar—an essential route for local residents and administration.
“The Chief Engineer of Project Sampark expressed profound appreciation for the professionalism, dedication, and resilience exhibited by Team 69 RCC, particularly under such challenging weather and geographical conditions. This swift response not only highlights BRO's operational expertise but also its steadfast commitment to nation-building and infrastructure resilience in border and remote areas,” the statement concluded.
