Restoration of the Chungthang–Lachen Axis: Key Connectivity in North Sikkim Revived After Disasters
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gangtok, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully reinstated the essential Chungthang–Lachen route in North Sikkim, a significant achievement in the recovery efforts following a series of natural disasters over the last two years, officials announced on Thursday.
Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, inaugurated the restored 28-km Chungthang–Lachen road and a 400-foot-long Bailey Suspension Bridge at Taram Chu, reinstating crucial connectivity to the strategically vital and remote area of North Sikkim.
The Lachen route had incurred severe damage due to the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in October 2023, Cyclone Remal in June 2024, and devastating cloudbursts in May and June 2025.
These repeated calamities had severed road access for months, heavily impacting local communities, security personnel, and the transportation of essential goods.
Through dedicated engineering efforts in challenging terrain and adverse weather, Project Swastik of the BRO, under the leadership of Brigadier Amit Sakhre, conducted round-the-clock operations to restore this vital route.
The project entailed the clearance of 96 landslides, the construction of four major bridges, the repair of two damaged bridges, and the establishment of several diversions.
Engineers also executed fresh formation cutting over eight kilometers of extremely hazardous terrain to re-establish communication lines.
The organization had previously opened the 7.5-km Naga–Toong stretch in October 2025, which offered partial connectivity to North Sikkim.
Officials described the restoration as a “herculean task,” emphasizing that the work necessitated continuous execution due to unstable slopes, frequent weather disruptions, and multiple sinking zones.
The reopening of this axis restores a crucial lifeline for residents, security forces, and economic activities in the area, showcasing both engineering resilience and robust collaboration with local communities.
In his address, Minister Seth stated that the completion of the Chungthang–Lachen road and the Taram Chu Bridge represents a significant advancement in enhancing connectivity in North Sikkim.
He commended the BRO’s commitment to service and reiterated the government’s dedication to the region’s development and the welfare of its inhabitants.
