On Independence Day, 15 August 2026, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai walked into Raipur's Town Hall and inaugurated something that blends history with ambition — a seven-day photo exhibition honouring Chhattisgarh's freedom fighters, the 150-year journey of 'Vande Mataram', and the state's record of governance and development under his administration.

What the Exhibition Puts on Display

The exhibition is structured around three interlocking narratives. First, the valour and sacrifice of Chhattisgarh's own freedom fighters — regional heroes whose contributions to India's independence have often been overshadowed by national-level accounts. Second, the 150-year historical arc of 'Vande Mataram', the national song composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 1870s that became a rallying cry of the independence movement. Third, the current government's record on sushaasan aur jankalyan (good governance and public welfare) under the banner of Viksit Chhattisgarh — a developed Chhattisgarh.

Speaking at the inauguration, CM Sai framed the event as a generational responsibility: 'It is our duty to carry the contributions of Chhattisgarh's brave heroes in the country's freedom struggle to the new generation. Drawing inspiration from our glorious heritage, Chhattisgarh is moving towards new heights of development.'

Chhattisgarh's Freedom Struggle — A Story Waiting to Be Told

Chhattisgarh, carved out of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000, has a rich but relatively underdocumented role in India's independence movement. Since statehood, successive governments have worked to bring that history into public consciousness. Exhibitions like this one sit squarely in that tradition — using visual storytelling to make regional history accessible, particularly to students and youth.

Indian states routinely organise such cultural events on Independence Day, but the inclusion of Vande Mataram's 150-year milestone gives this edition a specific national resonance that goes beyond routine commemoration.

Governance on the Gallery Wall

CM Sai, who took office in December 2023 as the BJP's choice to lead the state, has positioned sushaasan (good governance) as a core pillar of his tenure. Placing development achievements alongside freedom-struggle imagery is a deliberate political and cultural statement — connecting the sacrifices of the past to the promises of the present.
