Kolkata, Sep 24 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has apprehended a smuggler and confiscated six gold biscuits from him along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Nadia district of West Bengal.
The total weight of the recovered gold is 719.2 grams, with an estimated value of approximately Rs 80.55 lakh, according to a senior official.
In recent weeks, the BSF has successfully intercepted multiple gold smuggling operations, leading to the arrest of several smugglers and the seizure of gold worth crores.
“Troops from the 32 Bn BSF, part of the South Bengal Frontier, at the Banpur Border Outpost, received reliable intelligence about a gold smuggling attempt from Bangladesh. A tactical plan was devised, and two teams of soldiers took positions in the dense mango and banana orchards near the border fence,” the official explained.
“At around 8.30 a.m., two smugglers from India and two from Bangladesh were observed approaching from either side of the border. The Bangladeshi smugglers tossed small plastic packets across the fence towards their Indian counterparts. When the Indian smugglers attempted to retrieve the packets, BSF personnel intervened. One smuggler was captured immediately, while the other escaped. Two plastic packets and a mobile phone were recovered from the apprehended smuggler, along with another mobile phone discovered at the scene. Upon inspecting the packets, six gold biscuits were found,” he continued.
The captured smuggler is currently being interrogated, and data from the mobile phones is being analyzed to uncover further details about the gold smuggling network.
Subsequently, both the gold and the smuggler were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal proceedings. The official praised the dedication of the troops, stating that the BSF personnel are not only capable of securing the nation's borders but also of preventing criminal activities such as smuggling, infiltration, and human trafficking.
He reiterated his appeal to residents of border regions to report any information regarding gold smuggling to the BSF via the Seema Sathi helpline number 14419 or through text or voice messages on WhatsApp at 9903472227.
The official assured that individuals providing credible information would receive suitable rewards, and their identities would be kept confidential.
