Guwahati, Sep 24 (NationPress) Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed his appreciation on Wednesday for the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for endorsing a resolution in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) that pays homage to the late legendary Assamese artist Zubeen Garg.
Gogoi remarked, “I am thankful to Shri Rahul Gandhi for recognizing the sorrow and mourning of the Assamese community and for incorporating a tribute to the late Zubeen Garg in the resolution that was passed by the extended Congress Working Committee in Patna today.”
The CWC, on this day, expressed deep regret over the sudden and tragic loss of Assam's musical gem, Zubeen Garg, offering sincere condolences and support to his bereaved family and loyal followers.
“Having performed in over 40 languages, he was a genuine representative of India's rich multicultural and multilingual legacy, serving as a motivating emblem of unity amidst today’s socio-political challenges characterized by division and animosity,” the resolution read.
On Tuesday, Assam bid a heartfelt goodbye to the music legend Zubeen Garg, who was cremated with full state honors at Kamarkuchi, located on the outskirts of Guwahati. In accordance with his wishes, fans sang “Mayabini” – a song he had expressed should be sung at his funeral – as thousands joined the emotional farewell under the scorching sun.
This song, first presented in the 2001 Assamese film Daag, held a significant place in the singer's heart. The funeral procession commenced from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex and attracted massive crowds along the route.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Pabitra Margherita, among other dignitaries, paid their final respects.
After a second autopsy confirmed no foul play in his passing, Garg's remains were laid to rest. The 52-year-old musician had tragically passed away in Singapore on September 19 while swimming.
In a touching moment, his family brought along his cherished dogs – Iko, Diya, Rambo, and Maya – for a final farewell.
Zubeen Garg, whose music transcended genres, was not merely a singer for Assam; he was a cultural icon who influenced the soundscape of a generation. Prior to his last rites, a second post-mortem of Zubeen Garg was conducted at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
