Guwahati, Jan 30 (NationPress) The President of Assam Congress and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, advocating for the posthumous award of the Bharat Ratna to the late singer and composer Zubeen Garg.

Reflecting on his previous efforts, Gogoi mentioned that on December 3, 2025, he had formally introduced the matter in Parliament, advocating for the posthumous bestowal of India’s highest civilian honor on the celebrated artist.
Additionally, he noted that the day after, on December 4, 2025, he had contacted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing concerns surrounding the circumstances of Garg’s death during a Government of India cultural event abroad.
In that correspondence, he requested clarification and accountability from the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the situation.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, the Jorhat MP emphasized Zubeen Garg’s unmatched contributions to Indian music and cultural representation, particularly his role in bringing the Assamese language, folk traditions, and modern music to a national and international stage.
He asserted that Garg’s work significantly enhanced the cultural identity of Assam and the Northeast on India’s artistic map.
Gogoi also highlighted the overwhelming public sentiment in Assam and the Northeastern states following the artist’s demise, mentioning that citizens from various backgrounds have called for a suitable national honor for the late musician.
He concluded that awarding the Bharat Ratna posthumously to Zubeen Garg would serve as a fitting tribute to an artist whose legacy has become an integral part of India’s diverse cultural heritage and collective memory.
