New Delhi, Jan 28 (NationPress) The death toll from the Burari building collapse has risen to three after one additional body was recovered from the wreckage, as confirmed by rescue officials.
This catastrophic event took place in Kaushik Enclave, Burari, when a four-storey structure collapsed around 6:30 p.m., leaving several individuals trapped beneath the debris.
Among the victims were two minors -- Sadhna (17) and Radhika (8) -- who tragically lost their lives due to their injuries. Later that evening, rescuers recovered another body of a male victim. In addition, twelve individuals who were rescued are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. There are still concerns that between 6 to 10 individuals may remain trapped under the rubble.
In response, the Delhi government announced compensation for the victims of the building collapse.
While at the site, AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha stated, "This is an unfortunate event. The NDRF team is working tirelessly, with 16 rescues already completed. I hope no further incidents occur. Those accountable will face consequences."
He further noted that the government would provide Rs 10 lakh in compensation for the families of deceased adults (if applicable) and Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased minors. Additionally, Rs 2 lakh will be allocated to those seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those with minor injuries.
The AAP MLA also urged the public to avoid politicizing the tragedy and praised the ongoing rescue efforts.
Earlier in the day, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) Raja Banthia reported that the rescue operation, which has continued for over 12 hours, involved personnel from the Delhi Police, NDRF, MCD Fire Services, and DDMA.
"Fourteen individuals have been rescued to date, with two confirmed fatalities. Between 6 to 10 people could still be trapped under the wreckage, and efforts are being made to assist them," Banthia explained.
This collapse has left many families in despair. Mohammad Bariq, whose brother Mohammad Sharfaraz (20) is still unaccounted for, expressed his sorrow: "My brother, who worked as a laborer, was inside the building during the collapse. We have yet to locate him."
"My brother-in-law and a close friend Anil also worked here; they have not been found either," he added.
Previously, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi expressed her condolences and instructed the local administration to accelerate rescue and relief operations.
"This building collapse in Burari is profoundly tragic. I have spoken with the local government to ensure prompt relief and rescue efforts. All necessary assistance will be provided to affected families," she remarked in a post on X.
Authorities are also examining nearby buildings deemed at risk of collapse, prompting evacuations as a precautionary measure.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding building safety and construction standards in the region. Investigations are in progress to determine those responsible for this calamity.
