New Delhi, Jan 28 (NationPress) Tragically, two individuals have perished, and 12 others have been saved following the collapse of a four-storey building in the Burari region of New Delhi, as per reports from officials on Tuesday.
The unfortunate event took place around 6:30 p.m. on Monday in Kaushik Enclave, with authorities estimating that around 20 people could be trapped beneath the rubble, according to police.
Rescue and relief operations are currently in progress, with those rescued receiving treatment at a nearby medical facility.
Delhi's Chief Minister Atishi expressed her sorrow over the tragedy and instructed local officials to accelerate rescue operations.
"This building collapse incident in Burari is truly heartbreaking. I've communicated with local authorities to ensure prompt relief and rescue efforts. We will provide all necessary assistance to those impacted," she stated in a message on X.
As reported by Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) Raja Banthia, the police were alerted about the collapse at 6:52 p.m.
"We received a call at 6:52 p.m. regarding a building collapse in Kaushik Enclave, Burari. Upon arrival, we suspected that several labourers were trapped inside. Consequently, a rescue operation was launched, and so far, 10 people have been rescued. There may still be individuals trapped within the debris," he explained.
Upon arrival, authorities suspected that a number of labourers were caught inside.
DCP Banthia also noted that a combined rescue effort involving the Delhi Police, Fire Brigade, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was initiated.
Reports indicate that the labourers, who were working on the building's construction, were residing in rented accommodations in the vicinity.
Authorities have also flagged nearby structures as potentially at risk of collapsing, leading to precautionary evacuations.
Efforts to rescue any remaining individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris are ongoing.
