Kolkata, April 9 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted protection to Arjun Singh, the former BJP Lok Sabha member representing the Barrackpore constituency in the North 24 Parganas district, shielding him from any coercive police actions, including arrest, related to a shootout incident last month.

Justice Sengupta, presiding over the single-judge bench, instructed Singh to cooperate fully with the police during the investigation into the shootout, which resulted in injuries to a Trinamool Congress leader.

The court also ordered the police to present the CCTV footage from the shootout location by April 17, the date set for the next hearing.

Local leaders from the Trinamool Congress have accused Singh of injuring their party leader during the shootout that occurred on the night of March 26, alleging that he fired a shot from his licensed firearm.

Singh has consistently refuted these claims, stating that he was attempting to mediate a dispute between two factions of workers from a local jute mill when supporters of the ruling party, led by local leader Namit Singh, confronted him.

He asserted that the ruling party members fired at him, resulting in a close escape.

The police had requested Singh to surrender his licensed firearms at the local police station; however, he has declined to do so until receiving explicit instructions from the court.

This incident is not the first involving tension and violence near Singh's home. In October of the previous year, he sustained injuries from a crude bomb blast during an attack on his residence, allegedly carried out by local Trinamool Congress activists.
