Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court has issued an interim stay on any police investigation concerning BJP leader and film icon Mithun Chakraborty. This decision comes in light of allegations from the Kolkata Police, who accuse him of making communal remarks during a public event.
Justice Suvra Ghosh presided over the case and ordered that no investigations take place until May 20, at which point the matter will be revisited.
The controversy stems from a complaint filed last November, which alleged that Chakraborty made a highly incendiary statement at a BJP meeting in Kolkata on October 27, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
During his address, Chakraborty mentioned, “I express this in front of the Union Minister: I will do whatever is necessary for West Bengal. There are deeper meanings to my statement about what needs to be done. One leader claims that in a certain district, the Muslim population is 70% compared to 30% Hindus. He has even said that Hindus will be cut and disposed of in the Bhagirathi river. Astonishingly, the Chief Minister remained silent. A day will arrive when I will bury you in your own soil,” in reference to Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir and the population dynamics in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district.
This led to a formal complaint against Chakraborty at the Bowbazar Police station in central Kolkata, resulting in an FIR being filed against him.
In response, the BJP's West Bengal leadership stated that Chakraborty’s comments were merely a reaction to Kabir's earlier threats regarding Hindus in the Muslim-dominant Murshidabad district.
Subsequently, Chakraborty sought legal redress from the Calcutta High Court against the FIR, culminating in the interim stay on the investigation until May 20, as ruled by Justice Ghosh.
