Kolkata, Aug 1 (NationPress) - A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court has instructed the West Bengal Police to initiate an investigation into the Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC), which is governed by the Trinamool Congress. This action follows allegations of the corporation demanding Rs 20 lakh from a factory owner in Asansol, in exchange for a promise to refrain from taking action against illegal construction.
The bench, presided over by Justice Gaurang Kanth, questioned the legality of the corporation’s demand for such a sum, especially when it involves promises of non-action regarding any illegal construction. He indicated that the matter would be revisited on August 4, while instructing the police to commence their investigation by filing a case against the municipal authorities.
The situation unfolded when the factory owner sought permission to expand operations, only to be informed by AMC officials that part of the existing structure was illegal and slated for demolition on July 5. By paying the Rs 20 lakh penalty, the owner managed to avert demolition, but soon thereafter, the AMC demanded an additional Rs 20 lakh with assurances of no further action despite the illegality of the construction.
Frustrated by this ongoing demand, the factory owner approached Justice Kanth’s bench, where his lawyer highlighted that the AMC was soliciting funds purportedly for the Asansol General Fund. During the hearing, Justice Kanth expressed concern over how a municipal body could engage in such practices, thus directing the state police to launch an inquiry against the AMC authorities.
