The individuals apprehended include Pratik Bhargava, Sub-Divisional Inspector (SDI) of the Sub-Division Post Office in Konch, and Amir Hassan, Branch Post Master at Chandurra Post Office.
As per the CBI, a case was initiated on December 15 following a complaint that the accused officials sought an illicit advantage of Rs 15,000 from the complainant.
This bribe was allegedly requested to facilitate his release from a transfer order, to process his salary for October, and to assist in the re-verification of his caste certificate.
The complaint further indicated that SDI Bhargava had previously extorted Rs 5,000 from the complainant through threats and coercion.
After negotiations, the accused purportedly consented to lower the total bribe to Rs 12,500, with SDI Bhargava allegedly collecting an additional Rs 2,500 from the complainant.
On December 16, the CBI conducted a sting operation and caught both officials in the act as they were allegedly demanding and receiving the remaining bribe of Rs 5,000.
Both officials were immediately apprehended. The CBI stated that the trap operation is ongoing, with further investigations into the matter.
In a related incident, the CBI recently apprehended a Branch Manager and a contractual employee of UP Gramin Bank’s Durvasha Branch in Azamgarh for allegedly demanding and receiving a bribe from a farmer applying for a Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan.
The CBI is committed to investigating bribery cases, leading to the conviction of public officials and private individuals involved in corrupt practices, with penalties that include incarceration and significant fines.
