CBI Interrogates Anil Ambani in Connection with SBI's Rs 2,929 Crore Fraud Allegations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted an extensive 8-hour interrogation of Anil Ambani, the Chairperson of Reliance Group, on Thursday. This questioning stems from a complaint by the State Bank of India (SBI) regarding an alleged fraud amounting to Rs 2,929 crore involving Reliance Communications (RCom).
Ambani has been summoned for further questioning at the CBI office on Friday.
The CBI initiated its investigation following SBI's report of a loss of Rs 2,929 crore, attributed to alleged financial misappropriation by RCom and Anil Ambani through questionable transactions that breached loan agreements. The public sector bank categorized the accounts as fraudulent in June of the previous year, prompting CBI raids at both RCom's offices and Ambani's residence.
In addition to Ambani, Amit Dangi, the whole-time director at Authum Investment & Infrastructure Ltd., was also interrogated for 7 hours. Authum has acquired the assets of Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd. and Reliance Home Finance Ltd., both of which are currently under investigation.
In December, Ambani approached the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court endorsed SBI’s decision to pursue legal action. He contended that relevant documents, which formed the basis for the classification orders, were not initially shared with him and were only made available six months later.
Reliance Communications, previously a leading telecom operator, is presently navigating insolvency proceedings due to significant financial losses and debt accumulation.
Last week, Anil Ambani’s son, Jai Anmol Ambani, faced scrutiny from the CBI in connection with a Rs 228 crore fraud case involving Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL). He was questioned for two consecutive days.
This inquiry pertains to an alleged bank fraud where Jai Anmol Anil Ambani, along with former RHFL CEO Ravindra Sudhalkar and others, has been implicated.
The CBI filed a case on December 6, 2025, regarding the alleged bank fraud linked to RHFL, Jai Anmol Ambani, Ravindra Sudhalkar, and unidentified individuals, including public servants.
The criminal complaint targets RHFL—a subsidiary of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group—its executives, and unnamed bank officials, based on allegations from Union Bank of India. The complaint claims a criminal conspiracy, fraud, and misconduct that resulted in a wrongful loss of Rs 228.06 crore to the bank.
