Kolkata, April 9 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant decision to consolidate all its wings' offices in Kolkata into a single location.
Insiders familiar with the changes indicated that this step is aimed at fostering improved inter-departmental collaboration.
Presently, the CBI's four wings in Kolkata—comprising the Anti-Corruption Branch, Special Crime Branch, Economic Offenses Wing, and the Bank Securities and Fraud Branch—function from two distinct offices.
The first office is situated at Nizam Palace in central Kolkata, while the second is located at the Central Government Office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake, on the northern outskirts of the city.
However, it has been reported that all four wings will now operate from a new 14-storey building in New Town, also in the northern outskirts, with four floors designated for the CBI's use.
Sources mentioned that preparations are already underway to transfer documents and equipment from the Nizam Palace and CGO Complex to the new facility.
The goal is to commence operations from the new office either by the end of this month or at the latest, by next month.
Currently, various wings of the CBI, particularly those involved with the Anti-Corruption Branch, Special Crime Branch, and Economic Offenses Wing, are overwhelmed with numerous high-profile investigations in West Bengal, including the cash-for-school jobs scandal, municipal recruitment irregularities, ration distribution fraud, and the R.G. Kar rape-murder case, among others.
Some cases, like the R.G. Kar incident, require coordination between officers from different CBI departments.
While the Special Crime Branch is examining the rape and murder aspects and potential larger conspiracies involved, the Anti-Corruption Branch is investigating allegations of financial misconduct regarding the R.G. Kar case.
In light of this situation, sources emphasized the need for all wings to operate from a single location to enhance inter-departmental coordination, leading to the decision to relocate to the new office in New Town.
