Karnataka CCB gives clean chit to Siddaramaiah in sting video case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) Cyber Crime Police in Bengaluru has given a clean chit to former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Siddaramaiah in the alleged sting operation case, stating that the video circulated on social media appears to contain fabricated allegations. The official statement, issued on Thursday, 29 October 2026, said the investigation under Crime No. 56/2026 has not found evidence to substantiate the claims portrayed in the footage.
What the Investigation Found
According to the police statement, the allegations of sexual abuse depicted in the video appear to be part of a fabricated and deliberately constructed narrative. All individuals appearing in the video have been identified, questioned extensively, and in some cases examined on multiple occasions. Police stated that the allegations made or implied against named individuals are, prima facie, false and concocted.
The original mobile phone allegedly used to record the video has been traced, recovered, and seized, and has been sent for forensic examination to establish the authenticity and integrity of the recording. The forensic report is awaited.
Timeline of the Alleged Video
Investigators noted that the video was allegedly recorded in 2023 in connection with an incident purported to have occurred in 2011 — a gap of nearly 12 years. Police are examining why the video was recorded so long after the alleged incident and whether it was deliberately staged, fabricated, or manipulated to generate a misleading narrative. The video was uploaded to multiple social media platforms, including YouTube and X, during September and October 2026.
Sophisticated Digital Trail and Delhi Link
According to investigators, anonymous accounts were used to upload the video, employing virtual private networks (VPNs), masked IP addresses, virtual and spoofed phone numbers, and other anonymisation methods. Digital traces associated with locations outside Karnataka have also been identified.
Through technical analysis, investigators traced the mobile phone linked to the YouTube upload to a used and refurbished mobile phone shop in Delhi. The individuals involved in procuring the device have been identified. One accused connected with the procurement was arrested in the National Capital Region (NCR) on 24 October 2026. Preliminary findings indicate he appears to work as a freelance social media content creator and may have associations with certain politically influential individuals based in New Delhi, though the nature and extent of those alleged associations are still under investigation.
Possible Coordinated Effort to Malign Karnataka Leaders
The investigation has reportedly uncovered leads suggesting the video's circulation may have been part of a deliberate attempt to malign individuals holding positions of responsibility in Karnataka, influence public perception, and generate political controversy. Police are examining the possibility of a coordinated effort involving multiple individuals in planning, facilitating, uploading, or amplifying the video with malicious intent.
Certain individuals have been identified for further examination and notices have been issued to them, though the police have withheld their names at this stage to protect the integrity of the investigation and prevent interference with evidence.
Police Appeal for Restraint
The Bengaluru City Police appealed to the public, media organisations, and social media users to exercise restraint and not amplify unverified allegations or draw premature conclusions that could mislead the public or prejudice the ongoing investigation. The police said they are committed to establishing the truth and ensuring the law takes its course. Further investigation is underway.
