New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) The Union government has allocated Rs 32.68 crore for the State Consumer Welfare (Corpus) Fund in FY 24-25, announced the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on Friday, just before the World Consumer Rights Day.
World Consumer Rights Day, celebrated every year on March 15, serves as a critical reminder of the importance of protecting and upholding consumer rights.
This day provides a platform to advocate for the fundamental rights of consumers and to promote their respect and safeguarding.
The Ministry stated, “For the fiscal year 2024-25, Rs 32.68 crore has been allocated to various states for the creation or enhancement of their respective State Consumer Welfare (Corpus) Funds as part of the Central government’s contribution.”
Additionally, it was noted that 24 States and 1 Union Territory have set up Consumer Welfare (Corpus) Funds during this time.
The government further emphasized its commitment to creating a safer, transparent, and consumer-friendly economy.
“As India commemorates World Consumer Rights Day 2025, the emphasis is on fostering a safer and more transparent marketplace that benefits consumers,” the Ministry highlighted.
To empower consumers, enhance grievance redressal systems, and ensure a clear and equitable marketplace, the Department of Consumer Affairs has launched several innovative initiatives and policies.
“Significant advancements in 2024 included enhancements to e-commerce regulations, digital consumer protection, product safety standards, and sustainable consumption initiatives,” the Ministry explained.
The observance of World Consumer Rights Day originated in 1983 and marks President John F. Kennedy's address to the US Congress on March 15, 1962, where he was the first global leader to formally acknowledge consumer rights.
This year’s theme is 'a just transition to sustainable lifestyles'.
“This theme signifies the pressing need for sustainable and healthy lifestyle options to be made available, accessible, and affordable for all consumers, while ensuring that these transitions respect individuals’ fundamental rights and needs,” stated the Ministry.
“This year’s campaign emphasizes the necessary pathways for achieving sustainable lifestyles and advocates for stronger consumer protection and empowerment on a global scale,” it concluded.
