New Delhi, July 11 (NationPress) The Indian government has formulated a plan to provide subsidies amounting to Rs 1,345 crore aimed at manufacturers of Rare Earth magnets within the nation, as stated by Union Minister of Heavy Industry, H.D. Kumaraswamy on Friday.
"A proposal has been circulated advocating a Rs 1,345 crore subsidy for producers of Rare Earth magnets. This initiative is currently undergoing inter-ministerial discussions. Initially, it is suggested that there will be two manufacturers, but this could evolve by the time the scheme is finalized," the minister mentioned.
Kamran Rizvi, Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industry, elaborated that manufacturers engaged in the complete processing from Rare Earth oxides to magnets will qualify for the subsidy. The incentives envisaged in the scheme are anticipated to encompass both private and public sector firms.
“Our focus is on magnets. Any entity providing us with magnets will receive incentives. This Rs 1,345 crore scheme represents the preliminary outline we have circulated for inter-ministerial review. Currently, it is proposed to include two manufacturers," Rizvi conveyed.
Domestic automaker Mahindra & Mahindra and auto components firm Uno Minda have shown interest in establishing production facilities for magnets within the country.
In a meeting with the Ministry of Heavy Industries in June, Mahindra suggested that the company might either collaborate with an established manufacturer or enter a long-term supply agreement with a local producer. They are recognized as one of the leading electric vehicle manufacturers in India.
Uno Minda supplies components to major auto manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki.
China's restrictions on Rare Earth magnet exports in response to U.S. tariff increases have also affected other nations dependent on Chinese imports.
These magnets play a vital role in a variety of high-tech applications, from electronic devices and electric vehicles to large-scale industrial machinery.
Particularly in electric motors, especially those used in electric vehicles and wind turbines, Rare Earth magnets are essential due to their ability to produce strong magnetic fields in a compact size. They are also widely used in computer hard drives, loudspeakers, headphones, and medical equipment such as MRI scanners.
