Chandigarh, Oct 10 (NationPress) The Director General of Police (DGP) for Chandigarh, Sagar Preet Hooda, has established a six-member special investigation team (SIT) to look into the purported suicide of Y. Puran Kumar, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Haryana cadre, who tragically passed away on October 7.
On the previous day, the Chandigarh Police initiated a first information report (FIR) citing charges of abetment to suicide and invoking provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. This was based on a “final note” penned by the IPS officer, which implicated Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, among 11 other current and former officials, accusing them of harassment.
Earlier on Friday, Kumar’s spouse, Amneet P Kumar, a senior bureaucrat herself, addressed a letter to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, expressing her concerns over the “incomplete information” in the FIR and insisting that it be amended to include the correct names of all involved parties.
She argued that “diluted sections of the SC/ST Act” had been included in the FIR, which warranted modification.
Additionally, officials from Haryana representing the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, led by D. Suresh, the Resident Commissioner in Delhi, met with senior Chandigarh Police officials, urging for a thorough and timely investigation into the incident.
According to the orders from DGP Hooda, the SIT has been formed to investigate the FIR registered under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The SIT will be led by IGP Pushpendra Kumar, with members including SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, SP (City) K.M. Priyanka, DSP Charanjit Singh Virk, SDPO (South) Gurjit Kaur, and Inspector Jaiveer Singh Rana.
This team will gather evidence, interview witnesses, seek expert opinions, and compile a comprehensive report in a timely manner. Notably, a deadline for the SIT’s report submission was not specified. However, DGP's directive underscored the need for a “prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation, considering the gravity of the situation.”
