New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Sunday accused the INDIA bloc of disseminating misinformation regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill, aiming to mislead a specific community. He asserted that the bill, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is not designed against any group but seeks to safeguard individuals' constitutional right to property.
“The Waqf Amendment Bill is not targeted at anyone. It is a pro-people, pro-constitutional right to property amendment. The Opposition, whether it includes Owaisi or Rahul Gandhi, relies entirely on deceit and misinformation,” he stated.
He emphasized that in Kerala, numerous families have faced hardships due to alleged arbitrary land acquisitions by Waqf authorities.
“In Kerala alone, there are hundreds of families in Munambam, near Cochin, whose lands and properties have been seized unilaterally by the Waqf. The Waqf Amendment Act will protect individuals from losing their properties unjustly,” he added.
He also praised the Kerala Catholic Bishop Council for recently urging MPs to back the bill, describing it as a positive move. He called on all MPs, including those from Congress, to ensure that laws align with the Constitution and address the genuine issues faced by the populace.
The former Union Minister's call for the Waqf Amendment Bill to be cleared by Parliament comes ahead of its anticipated introduction in the House next week.
It is noteworthy that Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Friday that the Waqf Amendment Bill would be reintroduced during the ongoing Budget session of Parliament, which is set to conclude on April 4.
Amit Shah also reassured that there should be no fear regarding the proposed changes, as the Modi government is revising the Waqf Act within the framework of the Constitution.
"The opposition is misleading Muslims. No rights of Muslims will be curtailed. They are merely spreading falsehoods,” he remarked.
The controversial bill was referred to a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) in August 2024. The committee's extensive 655-page report was presented to both Houses of Parliament earlier this month amidst protests from the Opposition and Muslim groups.
