New Delhi, Aug 5 (NationPress) Supporting External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s appeal for a just and multipolar global framework, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP, Priyanka Chaturvedi, remarked on Tuesday that his statements mirror the realities of global trade dynamics and highlight the necessity for India to assert its stance against arbitrary trade barriers.
“What he articulated is indeed accurate, as numerous nations operate under tariffs, and those imposing arbitrary tariffs disrupt global trade,” Chaturvedi stated in response to the minister’s recent comments.
“Global trade should function in accordance with the WTO's rule-based system. If a nation begins to view itself as superior or attempts to create hurdles in any form, it becomes essential to voice concerns,” she emphasized.
Her remarks followed Jaishankar’s statement on Monday, where he underscored the significance of a fair, inclusive, and multipolar global order.
“Our shared aspiration is to witness a fair and representative global structure, not one controlled by a select few,” the minister remarked, amidst rising global trade tensions, including tariff threats from the US and pressure on India regarding its oil imports from Russia.
Chaturvedi further emphasized that India, as a developing nation, must safeguard its economic interests. “We are a developing nation, and our country requires trade. Our actions are coordinated with various nations. If any form of disruption occurs, it is crucial for us to raise our voice against it,” she asserted.
She also sharply reacted to recent statements made by US President Donald Trump, who had accused India’s oil trade with Russia of prolonging the Ukraine conflict.
Chaturvedi refuted Trump’s statement as misleading. “It is incorrect to assert that India’s oil purchases from Russia are influencing the war. The European Union has been purchasing oil as well. Trump consistently makes such erroneous claims,” she stated.
