Is the India-US Trade Agreement Truly Beneficial for India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena(UBT) expressed a cautious viewpoint regarding the newly announced trade agreement between India and the United States. While recognizing the deal as a significant milestone for the US, she noted that it may not necessarily serve India's interests in its current state.
In her response to the announcement, Chaturvedi pointed out that the agreement seems to favor the US substantially, particularly concerning its access to the Indian market.
During an interview with IANS, she commented, “From India's perspective, apart from the reduction in tariffs, there is no significant advantage in this deal. As it stands, it does not appear to be a win-win situation; rather, it seems the US gained considerable access to India's market.”
Delving into the details shared by US President Donald Trump, the Rajya Sabha MP mentioned that crucial elements of the agreement have yet to be officially disclosed in India.
She remarked, “This is a landmark agreement for the US. The announcement from President Trump underscores several critical points, although the comprehensive details have not yet been made public in our country. His tweets indicate that tariffs on Indian goods, previously at 50 percent, have been slashed to 18 percent. Furthermore, non-tariff barriers affecting Indian products have been eliminated, thereby enhancing access for Indian goods to the US market.”
Chaturvedi also referred to other statements made by the US President on social media. “He mentioned that India has refrained from purchasing Russian oil, which I am quoting from his tweet. A peace agreement was reached, which also aligns with US interests. They are asserting that India will open its markets in the agriculture and coal sectors,” she added.
Her comments arise in the backdrop of robust support for the trade agreement from the ruling BJP, which has termed the deal a historic success under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Conversely, opposition leaders have called for enhanced transparency.
On Monday, India and the United States finalized a trade deal following a phone call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump. As part of the agreement, the US has decreased tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent, while India has consented to relax certain trade restrictions on American products.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed this development, asserting that reduced tariffs on 'Made in India' products will unlock new global opportunities and bolster bilateral cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.
