Chennai, July 23 (NationPress) The expansion of Chennai International Airport's second phase is advancing swiftly, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) setting a completion target for March 2026. A team from New Delhi, led by AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar, recently assessed the ongoing developments and will continue their evaluations on Wednesday.

The purpose of the visit was to monitor the project's progress, with officials emphasizing the necessity of adhering to the timeline to manage the increasing number of passengers and enhance operational efficiency.

The new terminal, currently under construction, spans 86,135 square meters and will feature cutting-edge passenger facilities.

Once operational, it will greatly enhance the airport's capacity. The phase 2 expansion, estimated at Rs 1,207 crore, will include eight entry gates, 60 check-in counters, 10 X-ray scanners, nine remote boarding gates, and eight aerobridges.

Moreover, advanced baggage conveyor systems and automated scanners are being installed to improve security and facilitate seamless passenger movement.

This expansion responds to the steady rise in passenger traffic at Chennai Airport, which has surged from 2.2 crore in 2015 to a projected 3.5 crore by the end of 2025.

The AAI proposed this project in 2017, which was later approved by the Central Government with financial backing from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The total expansion covers 2.36 lakh square meters and is being executed in two phases. Phase 1, completed over 1.49 lakh square meters at a cost of Rs 1,260 crore, experienced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was eventually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 8, 2023.

After its commissioning, the old Terminal 3 was demolished to pave the way for Phase 2. Upon completion of the second phase, Chennai Airport will feature four integrated terminals - T1, T2, T3, and T4 - with a total annual passenger handling capacity exceeding 3.5 crore.

The updated layout will facilitate over 500 aircraft movements daily.

This design will ensure smooth access for both domestic and international travelers, significantly reducing congestion and wait times.

Officials highlighted the importance of expediting the construction schedule to prepare the airport for the growing demands of one of India's busiest aviation hubs.
