This incident follows a recent tragic event on GST Road near Singaperumal Koil, which occurred on Tuesday.

In that incident, three family members, including a one-year-old infant, tragically perished when a speeding tipper lorry collided with their stationary vehicle, crushing it between two heavy trucks.

According to police reports, the family was returning to Madurai after attending a function in Chennai. Their vehicle had halted at a traffic signal when the collision occurred. The tipper lorry, traveling at high speed from Chennai towards Chengalpattu, crashed into their car, pushing it into a container lorry in front.

The deceased have been identified as Ayyanar (65), Saravanan (35), the driver, and infant Sai Velan (1).

Despite these recent incidents, Tamil Nadu has seen a consistent decline in road accident-related fatalities over recent years.

In 2024, the state reported 273 fewer fatalities from road accidents compared to the previous year. Authorities credit this improvement to proactive safety measures, such as identifying and addressing accident-prone “Black Spots,” stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and decisive actions against drunk driving.

In 2023, Tamil Nadu recorded 17,526 fatal accidents, leading to 18,347 deaths. In 2024, these numbers slightly decreased to 17,282 accidents and 18,074 fatalities.

An internal police study indicated that driver error was responsible for 16,800 of the accidents in 2023. In response, police have utilized the Highway Patrol Mobile Application for real-time enforcement and public awareness initiatives.

A comprehensive survey identified 6,165 accident-prone locations, with safety measures implemented in over 3,165 of those locations in collaboration with the State Highways Department. Cities and districts throughout Tamil Nadu are now seeing a downward trend in accident cases.

Highway patrol teams have also played a vital role, rescuing over 12,600 critically injured persons by ensuring timely transportation to hospitals during the Golden Hour.

Additionally, thousands of awareness campaigns have been conducted to inform the public about safe and responsible driving behaviors.
