Chennai, Aug 2 (NationPress) — The Greater Chennai Corporation has unveiled plans for the revitalization of two significant flyover underpasses in the city — located at T. Nagar and Alwarpet — with a total investment of Rs 7.5 crore.
This initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at optimizing unused urban areas and enhancing public facilities for both residents and commuters.
The Rs 3.75 crore redevelopment strategy for the underpass at the North Usman Road–Mahalingapuram Road junction in T. Nagar will include the installation of two-wheeler Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).
Alongside the EV charging infrastructure, the site will offer designated parking for two-wheelers, five commercial kiosks to foster local entrepreneurship, and essential amenities for public convenience.
The civic administration will also introduce eight public toilets — comprising three for men, three for women, and two accessible for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
A Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water facility will be included to provide extra convenience for pedestrians and commuters.
An official from the Corporation confirmed that the redevelopment would not disrupt existing infrastructure, including the U-turn beneath the flyover, auto-rickshaw stands, or ambulance parking zones.
“We are committed to preserving essential transport and emergency service areas while enhancing the overall environment,” the official stated.
The redesigned space will feature landscaping with trees, plant beds, ornamental lighting, and street furniture to create a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
Public seating areas and tactile paving will be installed to enhance accessibility, particularly for individuals with visual impairments.
The area will also boast paved flooring and adequate stormwater drainage systems to ensure durability and cleanliness.
CCTV cameras and signage will be incorporated to improve safety and navigation.
Meanwhile, a comparable Rs 3.75 crore redevelopment project will be executed beneath the TTK Road–CP Ramaswamy Road flyover in Alwarpet.
While this location will not feature EV charging stations, it will provide organized parking for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, commercial stalls, landscaping, seating arrangements, and decorative lighting.
CCTV surveillance and enhanced drainage infrastructure will also be put in place. Separate tenders have been issued for both projects, with work expected to commence following the finalization of bids.
