Chennai, March 15 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to launch electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several key neighborhoods throughout the city, aiming to enhance the charging infrastructure and encourage the shift towards electric mobility.

Civic officials have indicated that the charging stations will be established in locations such as Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar, and Besant Nagar. Each site will feature two charging points, allowing drivers to charge their electric vehicles while utilizing nearby parking options.

This initiative is expected to cater to the increasing population of electric vehicle users in Chennai, encompassing both private vehicle owners and operators in the app-based taxi and logistics sectors.

As electric two-wheelers and cars gain popularity in the city, the presence of accessible charging facilities in busy commercial and residential zones is anticipated to enhance convenience for motorists who often spend extended periods on the road.

Civic authorities have pointed out that this project reflects the growing demand for public charging infrastructure, as more residents make the transition to electric mobility. The scarcity of easily reachable charging points has been a significant issue for many EV users, especially in crowded residential and commercial areas.

The initiative for establishing EV charging stations was previously discussed during a council meeting by Ward 104 councillor T.V. Shemmozhi, who emphasized the necessity for more public charging facilities across the city.

The councillor highlighted that numerous residents who have switched to electric vehicles are encountering challenges in finding charging stations, urging the corporation to consider placing charging facilities in residential neighborhoods.

In response to this request, Mayor R. Priya announced plans for the corporation to develop charging stations in over 15 locations throughout Chennai, as part of a larger strategy to promote sustainable urban transportation.

Officials mentioned that the EV charging stations will be constructed alongside parking facilities under a revamped Smart Parking Management System, which is being rolled out through a public-private partnership model. The integration of EV charging with designated parking spaces is expected to optimize space utilization and enhance accessibility for drivers.

The civic body is likely to commence work on this project by the end of the year, marking another significant stride in Chennai’s movement towards a cleaner and more sustainable transportation framework.
