Thiruvananthapuram, March 15 (NationPress) Veteran Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, a prominent figure in the political landscape of Kerala, is well-known for his contributions to the party. Nonetheless, a less recognized aspect of his efforts is his enduring dedication to the uplift of Dalit and Adivasi communities.

Fifteen years back, Chennithala initiated a distinctive project -- welcoming the New Year’s dawn with the most impoverished individuals. While some dismissed it as mere political theatrics, he remained resolute in his purpose.

In an interview with IANS, the four-time Lok Sabha MP and five-term legislator expressed that his greatest fulfillment comes from this initiative, which he believes reflects the authentic essence of Congress leadership.

"For the last 15 years, I have welcomed each New Year’s Day alongside the most disadvantaged communities. This has been my most rewarding achievement, bringing me immense joy," stated Chennithala, who also held the position of Kerala’s Home Minister from 2014 to 2016.

After more than a decade of close collaboration with marginalized groups, Chennithala now aspires to broaden his movement on a national scale.

"The moment has arrived for a nationwide Dalit revolution. As an initial step, we are hosting the Dalit Progressive Conclave 2025 under the Gandhigramam initiative," he informed IANS.

This conclave, set for March 23 in Thiruvananthapuram, will be inaugurated by Kerala Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar. The gathering will unite influential voices from across the nation to deliberate on strategies for Dalit empowerment and social justice.

Notable attendees include Prakash Yashwant Ambedkar (grandson of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar), MP Thol Thirumavalavan, Telangana Minister Dansari Anasuya, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge, Former Union Minister Mukul Wasnik, MP Shashi Tharoor, leader of the opposition V.D. Satheesan, Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh, Jignesh Mevani, among others.

With 16.6 percent of India’s population -- over 25 crore people -- still being marginalized, Chennithala emphasizes the urgency for a robust Dalit movement.

"Through this conclave, we intend to evolve this initiative into a national movement. We will collaborate with governments to guarantee that the most disadvantaged segments of society receive the attention and support they rightfully deserve," he remarked to IANS.
