Raipur, June 2 (NationPress) Liquor entrepreneur Vijay Bhatia, who is currently under a one-day judicial remand related to the Chhattisgarh liquor scandal, was brought before the Special Court in Raipur on Monday.
During the court session, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chhattisgarh requested an extension of his custody for an additional seven days.
After hearing from both parties, the court has deferred its decision, according to reports and sources. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and EOW had earlier presented Bhatia to courts in Delhi and Raipur on Sunday.
After discussions, he was placed under judicial custody for one day, with the EOW now aiming for an extension of his remand for another week, as per the sources.
On Sunday, the EOW executed extensive raids at various locations tied to Bhatia in Durg-Bhilai, unearthing significant documents believed to be vital for the ongoing probe.
Following his arrest in Delhi, officials brought him to court. Due to the Sunday court holiday, he was presented before the remand court, which ordered him to judicial custody for a day.
Bhatia had been evading law enforcement since a raid on his home two years prior. During Sunday’s operation, household staff were allowed to continue working while being interrogated. Female officers were present to ensure the interrogation was conducted properly.
After remaining elusive since an Enforcement Directorate raid two years ago, Bhatia has now been captured by the EOW.
The ACB and EOW detained Bhatia in connection with the Chhattisgarh liquor scam and transported him to Raipur while simultaneously raiding six of his properties in Durg-Bhilai.
On Sunday, EOW officials arrived at his Bhilai residence, conducting thorough searches and interrogating the occupants. Two years ago, on the birthday of former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, the ED had raided the homes of his political advisor, Officer on Special Duty, and Bhatia himself, igniting political tensions between the BJP and Congress.
Recently, ACB and EOW teams searched 39 locations linked to the liquor scam, recovering Rs 90 lakh in cash, gold, silver, and electronic devices.
The ED is currently investigating allegations of financial misappropriation exceeding Rs 2,000 crore, with indications of a syndicate involving officials and private businessmen orchestrating a fraudulent liquor distribution scheme between 2019 and 2022.
