Raipur, June 14 (NationPress) In a heartbreaking incident from Kanker district in Chhattisgarh, three children tragically lost their lives after allegedly being poisoned by their parents, who are now receiving urgent medical care in critical condition at a community health centre located in Pakhanjur.
The sorrowful event is thought to have transpired late at night in the village of PV-70, which is part of the Pankhajur area, under the authority of the Partapur police station.
A senior police official reported to IANS that the police were notified early Saturday morning regarding the family’s suicide attempt.
When law enforcement arrived, they found that the three children had already passed away, and the parents were immediately transported to the hospital.
“Both parents remain unconscious, creating challenges for law enforcement in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators hope to gather further details once the parents regain consciousness,” stated Ravi Kujur, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, in an interview with IANS.
As per the officer, the family comprises Bangladeshi migrants whose ancestors migrated to India in the 1970s.
The deceased children have been identified as 11-year-old Varsha Bairagi, 7-year-old Deepti Bairagi, and 5-year-old Devraj Bairagi. Their parents, who are currently receiving treatment, are Devendra Bairagi, aged 36, and Namita Bairagi, aged 32.
Authorities have refuted claims suggesting that the poison was ingested at a lodge.
“The distressing event occurred within the family’s residence in PV-70 village. The couple attempted to take their own lives along with their children by consuming poison. All three children have died, while the parents are continuing their treatment at the Pakhanjur Community Health Centre,” clarified investigating officer Yashwant Shyam to IANS.
The family resided in one of 133 settlements known as Paralkot Villages (PV), established in the Kapsi, Pakhanjur, and Bande region.
These settlements were created for individuals displaced from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and are numbered PV-1 through PV-133.
Many of these migrants have faced significant difficulties, having lost vast expanses of farmland and struggling to survive on limited resources.
In 1958, the Indian government initiated the Dandakaranya Development Authority to aid such refugees.
