New Delhi, Aug 16 (NationPress) Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Saturday urged citizens to adopt the principles of Swadeshi and Vocal for Local during the celebration of Krishna Janmashtami. He emphasized that this initiative should transform into a “mass movement” encouraging individuals to utilize locally manufactured products in their daily routine, thereby empowering farmers, artisans, and self-help groups.
In a video message released on the social media platform X, Chouhan conveyed his wishes for Janmashtami and drew a profound connection from Lord Krishna’s life.
“I wish everyone a joyful Krishna Janmashtami. May Lord Krishna shower his blessings upon you. His teachings possess the potential to redirect our lives. When the cowherds were preparing to honor Indra, Krishna advised them against it, suggesting instead to worship Govardhan, the source of our sustenance. The Govardhan Parvat provides grass for cows, fruits from its trees, and medicinal herbs for our health,” he stated.
Chouhan illustrated Krishna’s message as an ancient form of Vocal for Local.
“This embodies the essence of Vocal for Local as advocated by Lord Krishna himself. In modern terms, embrace Swadeshi. Purchase products made in your village, district, and state for everyday use. By supporting local products, we uplift artisans, self-help groups, and farmers. This will enhance their income, generate employment, and fortify our economy,” he added.
The Union Minister further called for transforming Swadeshi into a community-driven movement.
“Let us, while honoring Lord Krishna, pledge to buy only Swadeshi goods and propagate this message widely. Together, we must convert Swadeshi into a mass movement,” he urged.
This call for Swadeshi echoes the memories of Mahatma Gandhi's influential Swadeshi Movement, which served as a powerful mechanism against British colonial domination. Gandhi’s plea to reject foreign goods and embrace local products not only undermined the colonial economy but also nurtured national pride and self-reliance.
As India navigates global trade challenges and increasing tariffs, PM Modi's Vocal for Local initiative revitalizes the Gandhian spirit, empowering the nation to bolster its economy from within. With the festive and wedding seasons approaching, the Prime Minister has consistently urged citizens to prioritize Made-in-India products, linking economic autonomy with cultural pride.
Gandhi described Swadeshi as a philosophy of self-restraint and independence, referring to it as the “truest test of human efficiency.” Reimagined through initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, this philosophy continues to shape India’s vision of self-sufficiency.
The historic success of the Swadeshi Movement (1905–1911), which inspired millions to boycott foreign goods, serves as a testament to the strength of collective action.
