Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 17 (NationPress) – Ciza Thomas officially took the reins as the new Vice Chancellor of the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) on Wednesday, representing a significant milestone amidst the ongoing conflict between Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding key appointments.
Upon assuming her role, Thomas expressed her contentment, emphasizing the need to focus on progress rather than revisiting earlier disputes.
In a media briefing, she conveyed her gratitude for the warm welcome she received and her intention to collaborate closely with the government.
"There’s no point in lamenting what has been lost. What’s crucial is to rectify issues and advance the institution," she remarked, highlighting that there was no administrative paralysis during the uncertain times.
Addressing various accusations directed at her during the controversy, Thomas added, "It pains me to hear such claims, including that I stole official minutes. I have not taken any minutes. I fail to comprehend why I’m being depicted as a thief."
She underscored the importance of the institution itself, stating that KTU is far more significant than any individual, including herself.
Her assumption of office comes after a breakthrough in the ongoing discord between the Raj Bhavan and the state government.
A consensus was reached earlier this week regarding the appointments of Vice Chancellors at both KTU and the Kerala Digital University.
As part of the agreement, Saji Gopinath has been appointed as Vice Chancellor of the Digital University.
These appointments will be officially communicated to the Supreme Court, which is set to hear the matter again on Thursday.
During a previous hearing, the court noted the absence of agreement between the Governor and the government and directed a committee led by former Supreme Court judge, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, to propose names for Vice Chancellor positions.
However, with both parties now reaching a resolution, the court is expected to acknowledge the consensus.
The pressing question remains: had better judgment prevailed earlier, the state budget could have saved valuable resources, as the government incurred significant expenses in the legal battle and for Justice Dhulia’s services.
