Captain Vikram Batra of the 13 JAK Rifles was killed in action on 7 July 1999 during Operation Vijay, India's military campaign to evict Pakistani intruders from strategic heights in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. He was 24 years old at the time of his death. He was posthumously awarded India's highest wartime gallantry honour, the Param Vir Chakra, for his conspicuous bravery in the face of the enemy.
