Mumbai, Feb 18 (NationPress) Following the Supreme Court's reprimand of Ranveer Allahabadia, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted on Tuesday that obscenity cannot be justified under the guise of freedom of speech.
He commended the apex court's stern remarks, emphasizing that while everyone is entitled to free speech, any infringement on another's freedom will result in consequences.
“Everyone has the right to free speech, but if it infringes upon someone else's freedom, they are liable to face consequences. Obscenity cannot be tolerated as freedom of speech,” the chief minister stated.
He added, “In the past, identifying the perpetrator was straightforward. However, the rise of social media has blurred the lines of geographical jurisdiction concerning these offenses. Therefore, we are engaging with the Central government to formulate new laws that will clarify the geographical jurisdiction of social media.”
The Supreme Court on Tuesday admonished YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia regarding his remarks about parents and sex during a stand-up performance. Nonetheless, he was informed that he would not face arrest from either Maharashtra or Assam Police, as long as he cooperates with the investigation or the third complaint lodged in Jaipur. However, the apex court has instructed Allahbadia to submit his passport to Thane Police and cautioned him against attempting to leave the country without the court's permission.
Simultaneously, while the Vicky Kaushal film Chhaava is making headlines for its box office performance, the Maharashtra government has taken serious note of inappropriate content regarding Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire in 1681, on Wikipedia.
After the weekly cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the press, “We strongly condemn the controversial content about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia. The state government has directed IG Cyber to engage with Wikipedia to remove such contentious material and provide accurate information. Strict measures will be taken against those found responsible.”
NCP-SP Amol Kolhe, who has portrayed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in several performances, expressed his disappointment, stating that these incidents are recurring. “This is quite unfortunate as there seems to be a continuous effort to tarnish the character's legacy. A significant conspiracy appears to be at play aimed at erasing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's identity, with numerous inaccuracies added over the years. This reflects how Wikipedia currently represents this information,” he stated.
He lamented that while objectionable content is being published, the sacrifices of the ruler are continuously overshadowed, a situation that is regrettably repeating itself. He also urged the government to expedite measures to uphold the sentiments of the populace.
