New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday provided reassurance that the city will not experience a flood-like crisis. This declaration followed her thorough evaluation of flood management strategies and preparedness measures at the Yamuna and surrounding regions in the national capital.
The Chief Minister noted that due to water being released from the Hathinikund Barrage and intense rainfall in the Upper Yamuna area, the Central Water Commission has issued a warning stating that the water level of the Yamuna in Delhi might rise to 206 meters.
According to her, the Delhi Government activated its flood preparedness protocols well ahead of the monsoon season this year.
All departments are functioning tirelessly, ensuring that the situation remains under complete control. The Chief Minister reassured Delhi residents that there is no cause for concern – their safety is the government's utmost priority. For rescue and relief operations, 14 boats have been strategically positioned at critical locations, as stated in an official announcement.
She mentioned that nodal officers have been designated in key areas prone to waterlogging. Departments including PWD, Irrigation and Flood Control, and MCD have expedited the cleaning of drains. Inspections of pump houses have been conducted, and mobile pumps have been deployed, she stated.
The Chief Minister assured that even if minor issues arise, they will be limited to floodplain regions where water intrusion is expected. Residents in these areas have already been notified by the administration, and necessary arrangements have been made to relocate them to safer zones.
The Chief Minister's inspection commenced at Asita Ghat and proceeded to Yamuna Chhath Ghat, DM East Office, Regulator No. 12, and the Control Room. Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh accompanied her during this inspection.
She informed that currently, over one lakh cusecs of water is being released into the Yamuna, which is flowing smoothly without any hindrance, unlike previous instances that led to waterlogging.
She emphasized that this time, the government is meticulously overseeing all factors related to the water levels of the Yamuna, and departmental teams are consistently monitoring the flow, discharge, and water level conditions.
She recalled that during August-September 2023, Delhi faced an extraordinary flood when the Yamuna's water level reached 208.6 meters, inundating numerous residential areas and significantly disrupting public life.
At that time, the desilting of drains and the maintenance of barrages were inadequately managed, resulting in blocked and jammed gates at the ITO Barrage. However, after six months of persistent efforts, all ITO Barrage gates have now been fully opened, and drain desilting has been completed, thereby enhancing capacity, she noted.
