CM Rekha Gupta Honours India's First Param Vir Chakra Hero
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On the 79th martyrdom anniversary of Major Somnath Sharma, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta paid tribute to the soldier who earned India's highest wartime gallantry honour — and gave his life to hold a single airstrip that changed the course of Kashmir's fate in 1947.
Posting on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, CM Gupta wrote: 'भारत के प्रथम परमवीर चक्र विजेता मेजर सोमनाथ शर्मा जी के बलिदान दिवस पर उन्हें कोटि-कोटि नमन' — 'Innumerable salutes to Major Somnath Sharma, India's first Param Vir Chakra recipient, on his martyrdom anniversary.' She added that the saga of courage, duty, and love for the nation he wrote while defending Kashmir 'remains a source of pride for every Indian, immortal in the nation's memory.'The Battle for Badgam and a Decision That Cost Everything
On 3 November 1947, Major Somnath Sharma was commanding a company of the 4th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment near Badgam, just west of Srinagar. Tribal raiders backed by Pakistan had already begun their push toward the Srinagar airfield — the lifeline through which Indian troops were being airlifted into the newly-acceded state. Sharma's company was outnumbered three to one. Rather than fall back, he held the position, buying time for reinforcements and keeping the airfield open. He was killed when an ammunition box exploded. He was 25 years old.
The Srinagar airfield survived that day. Indian troops continued to pour in. The decision to hold Badgam at any cost is credited by military historians as one of the pivotal defensive actions of the first Indo-Pakistani war of 1947-48.
The Param Vir Chakra and the Legacy It Carries
The Param Vir Chakra was instituted on 26 January 1950 as independent India's highest award for battlefield gallantry — equivalent in standing to the Victoria Cross. The first batch of awards recognised acts of exceptional bravery during the 1947-48 Kashmir operations, and Major Sharma received the inaugural honour, posthumously. Every Param Vir Chakra citation since has carried the weight of that first name.
Indian political leaders across the spectrum observe 3 November as a day of formal remembrance — a ritual that ties national integration and the defence of Kashmir's accession directly to the armed forces' sacrifice. For BJP figures in particular, these tributes have become a consistent thread in official defence-anniversary messaging.
A soldier who chose duty over survival, a state saved by a single company's stand, and an award that now bears the standard he set — Major Somnath Sharma's story is not just history. It is the benchmark every future Param Vir Chakra recipient is measured against.
