Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 11 (NationPress) Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged officials to expedite the development of National Highway (NH) projects in Kerala, ensuring adherence to the specified timelines while maintaining the highest technical standards.
This statement was made during a high-level review meeting focused on evaluating the ongoing NH construction progress in the state.
While commending the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for their overall efficiency, the Chief Minister noted the delays in certain segments, particularly in Vadakara, Thuravoor, and Thiruvananthapuram.
He directed officials to take stringent action against contractors who are contributing to the sluggish pace of work.
Additionally, the Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of constructing an underpass at Nadapuram in Kannur district to ease bus traffic, following complaints from both bus operators and local residents.
At present, buses must travel to Chala before making a U-turn, causing significant inconvenience for commuters. He insisted that this matter be prioritized.
Stressing the importance of effective progress, CM Vijayan instructed District Collectors and Police Chiefs to proactively address any issues hindering construction.
Projects need to consider Kerala's distinct geographical features and high population density, he emphasized.
He also called for prompt resolution of any arbitration cases related to NH projects.
The review assessed timelines for 642 km of road work across 17 stretches. Of this total, 480 km is expected to be completed by December 2025, and 560 km by March 2026.
District-wise progress includes: Kasaragod (70 km of 83 km completed), Kannur (48 of 65 km), Kozhikode (55 of 69 km), Malappuram (76 of 77 km), Thrissur (42 of 62 km), Ernakulam (9 of 26 km), Alappuzha (34 of 95 km), Kollam (24 of 56 km), and Thiruvananthapuram (5 of 30 km).
Attendees of the meeting included Public Works Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, Industries Minister P. Rajeev, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty, Chief Secretary A. Jayathilak, State Police Chief Revada Chandrasekhar, along with senior officials from NHAI.
As a significant local body election approaches in December and the Assembly polls scheduled by May 2026, the deteriorating road conditions, particularly the delays in NH developments, have become critical issues for the Congress-led UDF and BJP.
