New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, June 4 (NationPress) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his son-in-law, state PWD Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, expressed relief on Wednesday after receiving assurances from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding the timely completion of the under-construction NH 66, which has suffered multiple collapses.
The two leaders met Gadkari in Delhi, where Riyas informed the press that the Union Minister confirmed that NH 66 will be ready on schedule, potentially as a New Year’s gift.
“The Minister assured us that strict measures will be enforced against those responsible for the collapses. They are awaiting a report from the National Highway Authority of India regarding this matter,” Riyas noted. Both he and Vijayan faced criticism after reports emerged last month about the highway's deterioration in Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kasargod.
During the meeting, the Union Minister listened to their concerns attentively and promised enhanced infrastructure support for Kerala, including the development of new roads.
Criticism was directed towards Vijayan by Congress General Secretary and MP from Alappuzha, K.C. Venugopal, who expressed his disbelief over the incidents discussed in a recent meeting aimed at addressing the NH 66’s issues in Malappuram.
Venugopal criticized Vijayan for claiming credit for NH 66 until its collapse occurred, and pointed out that despite being in Malappuram for two days post-collapse, he failed to visit the affected areas.
On the same day, Kerala's Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan remarked that it was surprising that neither Vijayan nor any member of the ruling Left party had addressed the NH 66 collapse.
“Previously, when minor issues arose on a bridge built during Congress rule, Vijayan filed a complaint against the then minister. Yet now, with significant damage to NH 66, he remains silent and uncritical of the Centre. We demand a CBI investigation, as many aspects of this construction are unclear, and the truth will eventually come to light,” he asserted.
