Thiruvananthapuram, May 21 (NationPress) The state Congress leader Sunny Joseph has urged the Pinarayi Vijayan administration to hold accountable those responsible for the deteriorating condition of the under-construction National Highway 66.

After sections of the highway collapsed, residents in the vicinity expressed their shock and concern. Joseph implored the Chief Minister, stating, "It is critical to address the public's fears. Currently, we are witnessing a blame game, and it is imperative to assign responsibility for this incident. With the rainy season approaching, the situation is becoming increasingly urgent."

The Kerala Congress leader pointed out the ongoing conflict between the Centre (BJP) and the state government, both attempting to claim credit for the highway's development prior to its deterioration.

“However, following this collapse, none are stepping up to accept accountability. This matter requires immediate attention,” Joseph insisted.

On Monday, a segment of the under-construction NH 66 in Kooriyad, Malappuram district, collapsed, with the retaining wall and service road subsiding. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but several vehicles sustained damage, inciting fear and protests in the area.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, similar cracks were observed on the highway in Kasargod and Thrissur districts.

The Youth Congress has criticized the State Public Works Department Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, who is also related to Vijayan, for his silence regarding the incident, despite previously taking credit for substantial road developments since taking office in 2021.

On Tuesday, during a celebration of his government's fourth anniversary, the Chief Minister described the NH 66 cracking as an "unfortunate" event.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Authority of India, responsible for the construction of NH 66, has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident, with senior officials on-site assessing the situation.

Point of View

It is essential to prioritize transparency and accountability from the state government. The public's safety and confidence hinge on effective governance.
