CMFRI Collaborates with Kerala Government to Enhance Marine Infrastructure

Kochi, Dec 9 (NationPress) The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is poised to collaborate with the Kerala government to bolster the coastal infrastructure and marine development strategies within the state.

The institute has formalized a partnership with the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) under the auspices of the state's Fisheries Department. This alliance seeks to facilitate the construction and execution of diverse developmental projects in the marine domain. The goal of this partnership is to harness CMFRI’s technical expertise to assist in the progress of initiatives led by KSCADC.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was executed by CMFRI Director Dr. Grinson George and KSCADC Managing Director P.I. Sheik Pareeth.

In accordance with the MoU, CMFRI will extend technical guidance and assistance to KSCADC regarding the planning, design, and execution of projects including marine hatcheries, marine aquariums, offshore structures, marine parks, sea cages, and artificial reefs.

"This collaboration will promote the effective utilization of resources and guarantee the sustainability of these projects," asserted CMFRI Director George.

This partnership aims to enhance fisheries infrastructure, boost marine biodiversity conservation, and encourage the preservation and restoration of marine habitats, thereby contributing to the development of the fisheries sector in Kerala, he stated.

Emphasizing the significance of this collaboration, he remarked that "CMFRI's scientific knowledge will play a crucial role in conserving marine biodiversity and safeguarding fragile ecosystems while executing developmental activities in this sector."

Moreover, the initiative also intends to generate sustainable income opportunities for coastal communities in the state through enhanced coastal aquaculture and prospective marine projects.

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute was established by the Central Government on February 3, 1947, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and became a part of the ICAR family in 1967. Over the span of more than 75 years, the Institute has developed into a prominent tropical marine fisheries research institute globally.
