Kolkata, Nov 21 (NationPress) On Friday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated coordinated raid activities across several sites in West Bengal, including the capital city of Kolkata, as part of an investigation into a extensive coal smuggling scandal worth several crores.
According to sources, officials from the central investigative agency are simultaneously conducting searches in neighboring Jharkhand, particularly in the coal-rich region of Dhanbad.
While the precise number of locations being searched in both states was not disclosed at the time of reporting, insiders indicated that the total would exceed 20.
The raids in West Bengal began early in the morning, targeting the offices and residences of coal traders and coal mining contractors in Kolkata, Salt Lake (located in the northern outskirts of Kolkata), Howrah, and the coal belt area of Asansol in the West Burdwan district.
ED teams, accompanied by personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), are carrying out these operations.
Sources revealed that one of the locations being searched in West Bengal is the office and residence of a prominent contractor associated with Coal India's subsidiary Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) in Asansol.
Additionally, raids are being executed at the office and residence of the BCCL contractor's younger brother.
In Salt Lake, searches are taking place at the homes of two businessmen involved in coal trading and exports.
Moreover, ED officials have also reached the residence of another businessman at Salap Crossing, in the Howrah district adjacent to Kolkata.
The ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have been conducting concurrent investigations into this multi-crore coal smuggling case. Recently, the CBI informed the court that it would soon conclude its investigation. The current raids by the ED at various sites in West Bengal and Jharkhand come shortly after the CBI's court submission on this matter.
