Kolkata, Jan 10 (NationPress) The cold wave affecting West Bengal has escalated as temperatures have further declined in Kolkata and various districts, with the chill expected to linger for several days ahead.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre located in Alipore, Kolkata, the temperature has plunged due to cold northerly winds entering the state, leading to a significant chill. Additionally, fog conditions have intensified in many areas.

The city reported a slight rise in minimum temperature to 12.1 degrees Celsius on Friday, but it fell again on Saturday to 11.5 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature recorded on Friday was 22.6 degrees Celsius, also 2.1 degrees below normal.

A fog warning has been issued across the state, predicting light to moderate fog in South Bengal districts during the morning hours, causing visibility to drop to 999-200 metres. Some areas may experience fog until midday, while a dense fog warning is in place for North Bengal, where visibility in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur could fall to 199-50 metres. Dry weather is expected statewide.

The ongoing cold spell has led to lower temperatures in several southern districts compared to those in the north, with the south experiencing more chill than most northern cities. On Saturday, Darjeeling recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 3.2 degrees Celsius.

After Darjeeling, no other northern city appears on the list of the lowest temperatures. However, Birbhum's Sriniketan in South Bengal recorded 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Several other districts also reported temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Notable temperatures include 7.7 degrees Celsius in Kalyani, 7.2 degrees Celsius in Bankura, and 8.6 degrees Celsius in Burdwan and Kalaikunda. Other areas such as Asansol, Berhampore, Suri, Uluberia, Digha, and more have also seen temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

In North Bengal, Kalimpong recorded a minimum of 8.3 degrees Celsius, while Malda, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Raiganj reported temperatures around 9 degrees Celsius.
