How long will the cold spell last in West Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 7 (NationPress) The cold weather in West Bengal is set to persist over the next few days, according to the Meteorological office's announcement on Wednesday. The cold spell is expected to remain, with the minimum temperature projected to decrease further.
Tuesday marked the coldest day in the past 13 years, as the city's temperature fell to 10.2 degrees Celsius.
This chilly trend continued on Wednesday, with Kolkata recording a minimum temperature of 10.3 degrees Celsius, which is 3.6 degrees below the normal level.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata's Alipore reported that this weather pattern will persist across south Bengal until Saturday.
“In addition to the severe cold, fog will affect most districts, including Kolkata, during the morning hours. Cold wave and 'cold day' conditions will be present in several districts. However, temperatures may experience a slight rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the weekend,” stated an official from RMC.
The maximum temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 18 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which is 6.7 degrees below normal. However, the skies cleared on Wednesday morning, allowing the fog to dissipate quickly, which should lead to an increase in the day's maximum temperature.
In the outskirts, Dum Dum reported a chilly 9.8 degrees Celsius this morning. Meanwhile, Sriniketan in Birbhum district was the coldest area in South Bengal, with a morning temperature of 6.6 degrees Celsius.
In the western districts, East Burdwan and Birbhum are expected to face cold wave conditions on Thursday.
Birbhum may continue experiencing these cold wave conditions until Friday morning.
Additionally, six other districts in south Bengal are anticipated to experience 'cold day' conditions (characterized by a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius or lower and a maximum daytime temperature that is 4.5 degrees Celsius or more below normal).
These districts include Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, West Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Nadia. Currently, there are no forecasts indicating cold wave conditions in north Bengal.
All districts in South Bengal, including Kolkata, are expected to remain foggy until Saturday. Visibility may drop to between 999 and 200 metres in some areas.
A dense fog warning has been issued for North 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia.
In North Bengal, dense fog is anticipated in eight districts, with visibility potentially dropping to between 50 and 199 metres.
Dense fog warnings will also remain in place for Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts on Thursday.
