Kolkata, Jan 11 (NationPress) Residents enduring the frigid temperatures across West Bengal found a momentary relief as the minimum temperature in Kolkata and other districts of South Bengal increased by four degrees Celsius on Sunday.
The temperature is now above the average for this period.
However, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Alipore, Kolkata, indicated that this warmer spell is expected to last for another 48 hours before the cold weather returns.
On Sunday morning, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, which is 1.2 degrees higher than normal and approximately 3.5 degrees warmer than the previous day.
Last week, temperatures in Kolkata dipped to around 10 degrees Celsius. Since that time, the temperature has remained consistently below normal.
On Saturday, the temperature fell to 11.5 degrees Celsius, and then unexpectedly surged to 15 degrees Celsius.
“The rise in minimum temperature across South Bengal is attributed to a Western Disturbance. This condition will persist for the next 48 hours, after which we can expect the winter chill to return,” stated an official from RMC.
In addition, a fog warning has been issued statewide.
The Met Office noted that all districts in South Bengal may experience varying levels of fog in the mornings.
Visibility could decrease to between 200 metres and 999 metres due to fog.
Similarly, on Sunday, the minimum temperature in Darjeeling stayed in the three-degree range (3.6 degrees Celsius).
In Sriniketan, located in Birbhum district, temperatures had dropped to the six-degree range on Saturday but rose slightly to 10.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
In many regions of South Bengal, temperatures have increased slightly, now exceeding 10 degrees Celsius.
The Met Office further indicated that no significant fluctuations in nighttime temperatures are expected across South Bengal over the next week.
