Kalaburagi (Karnataka), June 14 (NationPress) Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, has described the catastrophic crash of Air India flight AI-171 as an “unfortunate tragedy”. He assured that the central government, alongside the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will undertake a thorough investigation into this incident.

The flight, which was traveling from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick Airport, tragically went down shortly after take-off on June 12, claiming the lives of 241 out of 242 passengers on board.

With only one survivor reported, this incident marks one of the most devastating air disasters in recent history.

While addressing the media at Kalaburagi Airport on Saturday, Minister Joshi expressed profound grief over the significant loss of life. He highlighted that proactive measures will be instated to prevent such tragedies in the future.

“I pray that God grants strength to the families of those who perished in this crash. The central government, along with the airline and insurance companies, will ensure appropriate compensation. Additionally, arrangements for proper medical care for the injured are underway,” Joshi remarked.

In a separate commentary, Minister Joshi criticized the Congress party regarding its position on reservations and caste census, accusing it of lacking true social commitment.

He referenced historical opposition from prominent Congress figures, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi, towards reservation policies, deeming the current debate as mere political theatrics.

“B.R. Ambedkar established reservations in the Constitution, while Congress leaders have historically opposed it with lengthy speeches in Parliament. Their current calls for caste census and reservations are simply laughable,” Joshi stated.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared a new caste census under Section 11(2) of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission Act, 1995, emphasizing the necessity for updated data, as the last survey was conducted ten years ago.

The state government has tasked the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission to finalize the survey within 90 days, using Telangana’s 70-day completion time as a model.

“The central government has not pledged to conduct a socio-educational survey; therefore, we are taking it upon ourselves. We are dedicated to delivering social justice based on the findings of this survey,” Siddaramaiah stated.
