Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 17 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a fierce critique of the Congress party on Tuesday, asserting that it has entirely lost its ideological compass and become a pawn of divisive elements.
In his statements to the media, Sarma claimed that the Congress has morphed into what he termed a “BM party”, interpreting this to mean “Bangladeshi Muslim”, and accused the opposition of fostering elements that do not serve the interests of Assam.
The Chief Minister further alleged that many leaders within the Congress are propagating divisive politics and remarked that “numerous small Rakibul Hussains have emerged within the party,” referencing Dhubri Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, who is frequently embroiled in political controversies.
Sarma also contended that Congress gatherings have witnessed practices that he believes contradict the cultural fabric of the state.
He pointed out that recent meetings in the Sribhumi–Hailakandi area had allegedly seen objectionable occurrences, although he refrained from divulging specific instances.
During a Congress meeting held on Monday, Sarma alleged that Congress president in Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, was reportedly threatened by two leaders from his own party.
Sarma characterized Gogoi as a “parachute leader,” insinuating that he lacks a genuine connection with the grassroots of Assam.
“Thankfully, I did not come to power through the Congress. If I had, my entire life would have been tarnished,” he stated, emphasizing that the party's current path validated his choice to depart from Congress and join the BJP.
Reiterating his stance, Sarma accused the Congress of jeopardizing Assam’s security, identity, and social harmony for political leverage.
He affirmed that the BJP government in the state is dedicated to protecting the interests of the indigenous population while fostering peace and development.
