Srinagar, Oct 24 (NationPress) The Congress MLAs in Jammu and Kashmir are set to back the National Conference (NC) candidates in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for Friday.
A key meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) took place late Thursday evening in Srinagar, leading to this significant decision.
By choosing to support the NC, the Congress party has reinforced its political partnership with them.
Prominent Congress figure and JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra stated that all six Congress MLAs will vote in favor of the NC candidates.
In a statement to the media following the meeting, Karra highlighted that the main objective for the Congress-NC alliance is to ensure the BJP's defeat.
“Our coalition with the National Conference is robust and principled. Our mission is to guarantee that the BJP is defeated in these elections,” he declared.
The Rajya Sabha elections are anticipated to test the strength of alliances and reveal any divisions within the parties. As both sides prepare for this critical day, the focus is on the numbers and whether the united opposition can effectively counter the BJP's dominance in the area.
The NC has nominated four candidates: Mohammad Ramzan Chowdhary, Sajad Kichloo, Shami Oberoi, and Imran Nabi Dar for the four Rajya Sabha seats.
The BJP has put forward three candidates for three Rajya Sabha seats. For the fourth seat, the BJP has nominated its UT unit president, Sat Sharma.
The NC appears to have an advantage in three Rajya Sabha seats, while the BJP holds the upper hand in the fourth with 28 votes compared to the NC's alliance with 24 votes.
The PDP has declared its support for the NC regarding the third seat.
All elected MLAs from the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly can participate in the Rajya Sabha elections.
These elections are significant as they are taking place after nearly a decade, having been previously delayed due to the lack of an active Legislative Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir since February 2021.
