Congress MP Advocates for Paper Voting Amid Technical Issues with ONOE Bill

New Delhi, Dec 17 (NationPress) Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday advocated for paper voting, highlighting a major technical malfunction that occurred during the voting process related to the introduction of the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill in Parliament.
“Interestingly, while voting on the introduction of the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill, the electronic voting system in Parliament malfunctioned, resulting in numerous votes not being counted. It was the paper vote that accurately reflected the final tally,” the Congress MP expressed on X.
Previously, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the Constitution Amendment Bill for ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE Bill) in the Lok Sabha.
The bills garnered 269 votes in favor and 198 against, after which the session was temporarily adjourned.
The introduction of the ONOE Bill has set the stage for another confrontation in Parliament, as Opposition parties protested, calling for its retraction due to its anti-constitutional and anti-democratic implications.
Congress leaders issued a sharp condemnation of the government, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Bill.
Home Minister Amit Shah countered these accusations, asserting that it has become routine for the Congress party to resist progressive legislation.
The TDP, a significant ally of the BJP, expressed steadfast support for the ONOE Bill, stating that it would not only alleviate India’s fiscal responsibilities but also reduce electoral costs by over 40 percent.
Among the parties that strongly opposed the ONOE Bill were the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), AIMIM, and others.
All of these parties labeled the Bill as an attack on the Constitution and a blatant effort to erode democracy and usher in authoritarianism and dictatorship.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi expressed his dissent, stating that this legislation aims to undermine all regional parties.
